BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK - DAY 9

Today we are going to start with a pair of hikes on the western side of the park.

The first will be the longer of the two, so we can be done before the temperatures start to rise in the early afternoon.

The second will be a much shorter walk through the old homestead of Sam Nail, one of the early pioneers of the region.

DAY 9

This morning's hike will take us around the back side of that hill on the left to an overlook of a spring.
Cholla Cactus and Ocotillo in the background
We saw lots of different varieties of cacti on this trail.
This is appropiately called the Shin Dagger Cactus.
We spied a Cactus Wren's nest in the top of this yucca plant.
We finally made it around to the shady side of the mountain.
YES! More shade please.
There is a fresh water spring somewhere down among the trees.
Zooming in we found it.
Now for the long hike back.
It's always a good moment when ROVER comes back into sight from the trail.
This windmill has seen better days.
This one is still operational.
Not sure the purpose of this little grove of trees.
These crumbling walls are the only remaining structures on the hike.
Agave.
