OUR TRAVEL DAY WITH AN UNHAPPY ENDING

Arriving at:

TRAVEL DAY - 135 miles

SALT SPRINGS RECREATION AREA
to
LITTLE TALBOT ISLAND STATE PARK

A pleasant country road drive away from the Interstate

Using our Garmin RV770 GPS to plan our travel routes is really taking the chore out of the last minute decisions on which way to arrive at our next destination. The night before, in the comfort of sitting at the dinette table, all the routing decisions are made. We can avoid the Interstates and choose a more desirable small town, country backroads kind of experience for our travels. It really makes our travel days more enjoyable.

Today's trip was going along just as planned. A short section of I-295 to get around the top of Jacksonville was the only Interstate on the entire route. Once off the highway we had a lovely 15 mile drive along the waterfront of the St. Johns River until we arrive at our campground. Just as we are pulling up to the ranger station to check in it begins to pour down rain, like it does every afternoon in Florida during the summertime. We wait it out for a few minutes and then run for the office. After all the paperwork is done and rules are explained the first he says is we have to make a U-turn because the entrance to the campground is across the street. The day use area has the nice pristine beaches and picnic areas along the coastline and the campground is tucked away on the other side of A1A, surrounded by inland waterways and marshes. Equally as beautiful in it's own way.

We input our gate code and gain access to the campground. This is where things start to go bad. I notice the road in is very narrow (maybe 15 feet wide) and we encounter many turns with blind corners to navigate. I start to think what happens if we cross paths with someone pulling a trailer who is trying to exit the campground. How will we find room to pass each other and more importantly, who has the right of way and who has to back up their trailer to let the other person pass?

Just as we come around another corner there is a three way split in the road. The campsites are divided into sections so we travel down the road to the far left which includes our campsite, number 40. All of the roads are now obviously one-way and are maybe 10 feet wide with trees and bushes lining both sides and very tight turns . At one point our trailer is six inches away from scraping against this large pine tree on one side and thick thorny bushes on the other. We finally come around a corner at get a look at our site. There is no way to get any trailer into this site, approaching it from this direction, no matter what size it is. We will somehow have to make a U-turn and come in from the opposite direction. Luckily there is a boat ramp and parking area just two more sites down from us where we can get turned around.

Fortunate to have this turn around basin next door

Keep in mind this whole time it has been pouring down rain, my mirrors are just about useless to see out of and each time we get out of the truck to evaluate whether or not to continue inching forward we are attacked by a swarm of hungry mosquitoes. When we got to the clearing around the boat ramp I put the truck in park and just sat still for a while, it was then I seriously considered just throwing in the towel and search the surrounding area for another campground.

Snuggly fit into our campsite #40

We are supposed to be here for a week to visit with Tricia's friend, then leave the day after the Fourth of July to head into Georgia. Guess we will somehow have to make this work for us. After several tries we manage to get the trailer into the site, leveled, unhooked and plugged into the electricity. The whole time we were relentlessly being attacked by the mosquitoes.

I have an idea, let's get out of here and get a drink and some early dinner. We passed several waterfront restaurant/bars on the way here, one of them must have some good food and cold drinks. Still raining, we sat inside the restaurant looking outside, watching the St. Johns Ferry crossing back and forth across the wide mouth of the river.

TRAVEL DAY - 85 miles

RAINBOW SPRINGS STATE PARK
to
SALT SPRINGS RECREATION AREA (USFS)

An beautiful scenic drive through Ocala National Forest

Today's drive was a breeze compared to our previous travel day through the St. Pete/Tampa Bay area. We are headed for the Ocala National Forest were we have been several times before. Once we made the turn north on to SR19 at Altoona we were traveling on a portion of the Florida Black Bear National Scenic Byway.

We were well aware the the cell phone coverage inside the forest is spotty at best. For this reason I spent three hours on Saturday learning how to program our new Garmin GPS unit we purchased before leaving on our journey. Up until this point we have been using our cell phones and Google or Apple maps to navigate THE POD to it's new home. The GPS performed flawlessly and we arrived safely at Salt Springs Recreation Area for a three day visit.

After checking in at the ranger station I suddenly realized that our usual practice of Tricia getting out of the truck and guiding me in backing up the trailer into our site was not going to work today. We planned for this before our trip started by purchasing a pair of Midland 2-way Radios to use for just this scenario and for use while hiking out in the woods. Of course these were buried in the back seat of the truck somewhere and were still new in the box and not charged up. In other words, useless to us today. Once parked and set up they were the first thing we located and put on the charger for next time.

You may be wondering, didn't we order THE POD with the fancy bluetooth wireless backup camera option? Well yes we did. It worked perfectly at the dealership when they were demonstrating everything to us on our walk through just before taking delivery on the trailer. That was the last time it worked. To be fair I won't mention the brand of the backup camera just yet, I mailed the monitor portion of the system back to manufacturer and they are sending me a new one based on my describing the symptoms I was experiencing. Time will tell if that fixes the problem.

While we are on the topic of failures. We also purchased a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) unit for the trailer tires. The little remote sensors screw onto each valve stem and report the air pressure and temperature for each tire as you roll down the road, critical information when tires get older or you roll over something and puncture a tire. Each sensor has to be programmed separately and while the first two went fine the third one just won't work, and you can't program the fourth one until the third one is done. This will be my next project to straighten out with the manufacturer.

Also on the list of failures is my little weather station I purchased. It has guess what, wireless sensors to report to a wireless base station, that has to connect to your computer though an ethernet connection. So while I could set it up and collect all the data into the base station, I have no way at the present time to get the data out of the base station. I future trip to Best Buy to purchase a small router should solve this problem fairly easily.

With all theses problems I still have not tried to set up our wireless leveling system we purchased for the trailer. Just not ready for another failure right now.

NO U-TURNS ON THE INTERSTATE!

Arriving at:
Rainbow Springs State Park

TRAVEL DAY - 141 miles

FORT DESOTO PARK
to
RAINBOW SPRINGS STATE PARK

Not the route we had planned to do!

Well we all know you can plan all you want, but sometimes it just doesn't turn out that way. That is the case with the route we took today from Fort DeSoto Park to Rainbow Springs State Park. We weren't on the road more than ten minutes when we came to the first major intersection and a decision had to be made. Take I-275 South, back over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and around the major metro areas of St. Petersburg and Tampa, OR take I-275 North right through the heart of both downtown areas. Well, when we were passing by Tropicana Stadium I realized I turned the wrong way and we were committed to taking the north route. I considered getting off at the first exit and reentering the highway going the way we planned, but we were already downtown and the traffic on the exits was nearly at a stand still, not a scenario I wanted to be towing a 28 foot trailer in.

We had no choice but to keep pressing on down the highway. Cars were frequently changing lanes left and right immediately in front of me. Some trying to get off at their exit and then others just getting on to speed off to whatever destination they needed to be at. I was just getting comfortable when the lane that I had been traveling for the last ten miles suddenly became an EXIT ONLY lane. Last minute lane changes in heavy traffic while towing a trailer is not a good combination to deal with. We then approached a fairly long bridge and the traffic improved and I thought the worst was over. Nope, we just survived the downtown areas of St. Petersburg and were now approaching downtown Tampa. All of this is going on around 10AM on a Thursday morning, not exactly the height of rush hour, but bad enough.

Once outside of the Tampa downtown exits we found ourselves on I-4 East and a short time later were exiting onto US301 North. This intersection is at the northeast corner of the Tampa Bay Fairgrounds, the exact location of where we ordered our Airstream just four months earlier. Every January they host the Florida RV Supershow, the largest RV show in the country.

Once off the Interstates and onto the two and four lane backroads I felt at ease. The first forty miles of this trip was mentally taxing to say the least, the last hundred miles will be much easier going. Passing through small towns like Zephyrhills, Lacoochee, Bushnell and the beautiful Floral City, thing were getting back to normal. Then when passing through the town of Inverness things got a little weird. While rolling through town at 45MPH, out of the corner of my eye I see a large pink elephant wearing wire rimmed eyeglasses, with eyes that were all lit up. It was there and gone so fast I wasn't really sure what I saw. So when we got to our destination I did what everyone would do, I looked it up on the internet and sure enough there it was. It was listed on RoadsideAmerica.com, check out the link if you don't believe me.

Additional comments:

This was our second county park visit this month. The first was in the Miami area and this one is near Tampa/St. Pete and yet they both seem to be in need of some simple maintenance. Broken locks on the bathroom stalls and missing clothes hooks in the shower stalls. Simple and inexpensive things to repair.

We weren't quite sure what to expect when visiting a National Memorial site. We weren't expecting anything as grand as a National Park or National Monument, but still a special place to be set aside for preservation. That is exactly what you will find here at DeSoto National Memorial. Most of the evidence of what this location was like back in the 1530-40's is long gone. To make up for that fact the National Park Service has set up a visitors center where they show a twenty minute documentary of DeSoto's 4 year, 4000 mile journey exploring the entire southeastern area of what would later become the United States. In the winter months they hold reenactments here in a little village they have created.

During our visit the temps were in the 90's so we opted for the movie and a short half mile walk around a trail in the woods. We could see the actual memorial site but didn't walk the entire mile long route to get up close. A lot of the local residents seem to use this trail as an exercise path and the entire walk is dog friendly.

VISITING WITH FAMILY

TRAVEL DAY - 153 miles

ORTONA SOUTH COE PARK
to
FORT DESOTO COUNTY PARK

No avoiding the Interstate today, but it did take us over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge!

Today's move was our longest to date, 153 miles across the heartland of southwest Florida. Half of the trip was on four lane divided highway, similar to an Interstate, but with stop lights and intersections. The other half was two lane roads which traveled through small towns like Arcadia and Myakka City, reminding us of why we avoid the Interstates and the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like St. Petersburg.

The one highlight of today's route was going over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that spans Tampa Bay. The bridge is a little over four miles long and 430 feet high. It was designed and built by the same team that did the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys which we traveled over last month. One odd fact is the Seven Mile Bridge is only 6.765 miles long?

Our reason for zig-zagging across the state of Florida is to visit with family and friends one last time before leaving on our journey to explore the other states in our nation. Tricia has two aunts and a brother who live in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area and they are all coming over to our campsite for an afternoon BBQ and a tour of THE POD, our new Airstream.

WE KEEP SHEDDING WEIGHT!

Arriving at:

TRAVEL DAY - 126 miles

LARRY AND PENNY THOMPSON PARK
to
ORTONA SOUTH COE PARK

No Interstate miles on this move. Yeah!

When we plan our route the day before moving day there are a few things we always try to avoid, some we have control over and some we don't. What we do have control over is avoiding Interstate Highways and toll roads. We're in no hurry to get to the next campground because there seems to always be several hours between check out time at one park and check in time at the next. Plus you never get to SEE anything when you're speeding down the Interstate and everyone else seems to be in such a rush. Yep, it's definitely the less traveled back roads for us.

The things we don't have control over is the weather and traffic. Rain and especially wind are not safe when it comes to towing a 27 foot trailer behind your truck. We try to control the traffic by avoiding rush hours and large cities at any time of the day. Generally we travel between 10AM and 2PM which also avoids having to back into a campsite in the dark.

A few days before we moved the trailer we had our third and final yard sale at our friends home. The last of our household items that we were storing at their home went out into the driveway at 6:30AM and by 9AM we were done, mostly because at 9:15AM it started raining. All of the GOOD STUFF was sold and what was left we happily donated to their favorite charity for pickup. Several items from our truck and trailer were added to the items for sale, namely a couple of EXTRA chairs, a chop saw?, an old style battery jump starter, a 3 ton floor jack and our other 10x10 canopy, the one that didn't get broken. All this stuff sold and as a result we netted $506 and shed another 240 pounds.

Additional comments:

With an affordable $565 a month rate it appears the campground attracts a lot of long term or even semi permanent residents. The swimming pool located inside the campground was closed during our stay here in June??? Outside in the 270 acre park is a swimming beach and water park with slides, but it appears to be closed and abandoned. I didn't ask but I suspect the county is unable to supply the funds to support these amenities.

We have enjoyed the snorkeling trips here at least three times in the past that I can remember and once, back when I owned my own boat, camped on Elliot Key.
