We weren't quite sure what to expect when visiting a National Memorial site. We weren't expecting anything as grand as a National Park or National Monument, but still a special place to be set aside for preservation. That is exactly what you will find here at DeSoto National Memorial. Most of the evidence of what this location was like back in the 1530-40's is long gone. To make up for that fact the National Park Service has set up a visitors center where they show a twenty minute documentary of DeSoto's 4 year, 4000 mile journey exploring the entire southeastern area of what would later become the United States. In the winter months they hold reenactments here in a little village they have created.

During our visit the temps were in the 90's so we opted for the movie and a short half mile walk around a trail in the woods. We could see the actual memorial site but didn't walk the entire mile long route to get up close. A lot of the local residents seem to use this trail as an exercise path and the entire walk is dog friendly.
