TRAVEL DAY - 153 miles

ORTONA SOUTH COE PARK
to
FORT DESOTO COUNTY PARK

No avoiding the Interstate today, but it did take us over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge!

Today's move was our longest to date, 153 miles across the heartland of southwest Florida. Half of the trip was on four lane divided highway, similar to an Interstate, but with stop lights and intersections. The other half was two lane roads which traveled through small towns like Arcadia and Myakka City, reminding us of why we avoid the Interstates and the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like St. Petersburg.

The one highlight of today's route was going over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge that spans Tampa Bay. The bridge is a little over four miles long and 430 feet high. It was designed and built by the same team that did the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys which we traveled over last month. One odd fact is the Seven Mile Bridge is only 6.765 miles long?

Our reason for zig-zagging across the state of Florida is to visit with family and friends one last time before leaving on our journey to explore the other states in our nation. Tricia has two aunts and a brother who live in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area and they are all coming over to our campsite for an afternoon BBQ and a tour of THE POD, our new Airstream.
