Most of our roundabout route today was determined by the fact we wanted to steer clear of the big city of Charleston and all the traffic that would bring, and it worked. By deviating from the direct route by over thirty miles we had a pleasant drive through a dozen or so small towns on some two lane backroads. One of the small towns was Summerville where they claim to be the birthplace of Sweet Tea. Further research later proved that to be not so true.
The last few miles of today's journey took us along a section of US17 known as the Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway. A seven mile stretch near Mount Pleasant has roadside stands where you can pull off and purchase a one of a kind handmade treasure. If you are lucky you might even see one being woven right in front of you while you shop. These baskets have been hand woven for over 300 years and today it's not just baskets anymore, from hats to trivets to drink coasters, there is much to chose from.
Every year on the first weekend in June the town of Mount Pleasant holds a free Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival where they strive to promote and preserve the Gullah Geechee peoples' heritage, culture and their sweetgrass basket making art form.
