Self guided tour of Fort Frederica

The center avenue of town that leads to the fort

This small section of the fort is the only thing that remains above ground
of the settlement that housed nearly a thousand people

Such a beautiful view of the river and surrounding marshes

There is not much to SEE at this National Monument. Today the area is primarily an active archeological site and a training ground for the local school children to hone their skills at discovering the treasures hidden beneath the surface.

A small section of the fort and the foundations of some homes and public buildings is all that remains to be SEEN here. After being neglected for over 100 years under private ownership, the National Park Service has done a fantastic job of preserving the site and offers an informative documentary film highlighting the history of this southern Georgia settlement.
