DESTINATION: THE ALASKAN BORDER
COMPLETED - 2182 miles=(3511 kilometers) ⟺ 404 miles=(650 kilometers) - STILL TO GO |
Once again the scenery along our drive today did not dissappoint. This is just one of many photos we took of the Alaska Highway while traveling near the southern border of the Yukon Territory today.
We weren't too far down the road before we had our first caribou sighting of the day. He was very busy doing what I could only describe as
"licking the shoulder of the road", presumably for the salt. We stopped about 30 yards away from him and put on our hazard lights to warn any other approaching vehicles. After about two minutes of Tricia taking photos I started to edge closer and he looked straight at us before prancing away into the cover of the woods.
Just a few more miles down the road we came across three more caribou. Two of them were off the roadway up on a rise where the clearing meets the edge of the woods. The other one was a little closer to the roadway and had a #16 collar around his neck.
I did a little research and found out that reindeer and caribou are the same animal and are a member of the deer family. In Europe they are called reindeer and in North America they are called caribou if they are wild and reindeer if they are domesticated.
Safely tucked in at the Teslin Lake Territorial Park campground.
Our best view from this campsite is out our side windows instead of the rear.
