FRANCONIA NOTCH AND CANNON MOUNTAIN (NH)

TODAY

TRAVEL DAY
YEAR #2 - STOP #41

This week we will be visiting the White Mountain National Forest in northern New Hampshire. There are several noteworthy features here to explore, with the predominate one being Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet. There are three popular means of transportation to reach the summit, we did two of them.

Franconia Notch State Park (where our campsite is located) and Cannon Mountain (where The Old Man of the Mountain was revered for nearly 200 years) are also located inside the White Mountain National Forest.

Does anyone want to take a guess at the three most popular ways to reach the summit of Mount Washington?

I mentioned The Old Man of the Mountain and anyone from New Hampshire, or anywhere in New England for that matter, knows exactly what I'm talking about. First discovered in the early 1800s, this natural rock formation on the side of Cannon Mountain was a huge tourist draw for the entire region. It could have been waiting there to be discovered for over 10,000 years, ever since the glaciers which shaped the Appalachian Mountain Range receded from this area.

By the 1920s cracks began to form in the forehead area of the 40 foot tall formation and attempts were made to save it from crashing down some 1200 feet onto the ground below. Huge chains and turnbuckles were put in place and cement was used to fill in the cracks, but on May 3, 2003 it all came tumbling down. In the end, repeated freezing, then thawing and gravity claimed the iconic formation!

We have plans to visit several attractions while we are here this week and will post separate blog entries of each one, including photos of course!
