BLACK HILLS CAVERNS (SD)

SUNDAY - We were rolling off the campsite this morning at 9:00AM after saying our "goodbyes" and "see ya laters" to our friends Rod and Sharon.

By 10:00AM we were rolling past our first sightseeing location of the day. It's a rather large wind vane in between Old US-14 and Interstate-90 outside the town of Farrall, WY.

It's an early 1950s Beechcraft Twin Bonanza plane that wasn't in good enough shape to restore to flying condition, but was in too good of shape to just scrap it or let it rust away in a field.

So the owners, Mick and Jean Quaal, decided to put it on top of a 70' pole and with the help of a computer driven electric motor it is turned to show the current direction the wind is blowing.

Then just 3½-miles down the road from the wind vane was our second sightseeing destination for today. This one was a lot more interesting, but it did require an $11 guided tour ticket.

The Vore Buffalo Jump is a Native American hunting site located in a natural sink hole. Rather than try to explain the complexities of the site I'll just share a few photos of what we saw today and provide a LINK to the Non-Profit Foundation's website if you want to know more.

The bottom of the sink hole is covered by a metal building to protect the excavation site.

Hey! How did you get in here?

You know the rules. No ticket? No entry. No exceptions!

The bottom of the pit is just littered with multiple levels of bison bones.

Some of the arrowheads used to hunt the bison can also be found in the pit.

Skulls, ribs and jawbones, they can all be found here.

MONDAY - You may be wonderng why would we be spending the night in another Walmart so soon after just leaving one a few days ago?

Well it's so we could wake up this morning and be close to our sightseeing destination for today, Black Hills Caverns.

We haven't done a cave tour since early March and we were ecited to be getting underground again. In hindsight, we should have probably passed on visiting this cave. There were only a few of the formations we look for forward to seeing and the ones they did have were "tiny" in comparison to others we've seen elsewhere.

We were told there would be 125 steps up and 125 steps down on the tour, they were right!

Most of the tour was spent looking at the cave popcorn formations.
