THURSDAY |
ALASKAN STOP #7TANANA RIVER PULLOUTOUTSIDE OF DELTA JUNCTION, AK |
After a good day of rest yesterday we pressed on down the road a little bit farther than we originally planned to do today.
We stopped in Tok to give me the time, and cell phone service, to create and upload yesterday's blogpost. Tricia spent this time checking out the Visitor Center, mailing a couple of post cards to her neice and nephew and grocery shopping across the street.
We returned to the Alaska Highway and headed north for the terminus at Delta Junction. If you Google "the length of the Alaska Highway" it will probably claim the highway to be 1389 miles long, that's true, TODAY.
But in the 1940's when the highway was first built it was 1422 miles long. It has since undergone several reroutings and shortenings with additional bridges being the main reason for the change in length.
Here in Delta Junction, the official northern "End of the Alaska Highway", they still go by the original milepost markers.
We made it about 20 miles north of Delta Junction before we found a scenic pullout to camp in for tonight and tomorrow we'll pass through Fairbanks before stopping for the day.
Angry looking clouds were covering the tops of the Alaska Range mountains today.
We made it to the "End of the Alaska Highway" today.
They warned us the mosquitos were big in Alaska, but this can't be right!
The Alaska Pipeline paralleled the roadway for a short distance today.
We'll talk more on that later in this trip, I promise.
After picking up a full bag of trash from our pullout we had a nice place to camp.
A view of the Tanana River behind THE POD.
