ALASKAN STOP #6Kendesnii CampgroundOUTSIDE OF SLANA, AK |
For two days we spent our time at a FREE National Park Service campground 27 miles deep into the Wrangell St.-Elias National Park & Preserve on Nebesna Road. The Kendesnii Campground is the only NPS campground in the entire park and is relatively new, since it just opened 10 years ago in 2012.
Wrangell St.-Elias is the largest national park in the United States at 8.3 million acres, throw in the National Preserve portion of the park and that number goes up to 13.2 million acres. The next three largest National Parks are also here in Alaska.
Despite all that space there are only two roads that go into the park, the 59-mile long McCarthy Road which we drove last week and the 42-mile long Nabesna Road we spent time on this week. We were only able to go down the first 27-miles of Nabesna Road because just beyond the campground there are several creeks crossing the roadway and this time of year the snow melt makes them pretty much impassible.
WEDNESDAY - We finally "took a day off" on Wednesday and just relaxed and enjoyed our surroundings. No driving, no sightseeing outings, nothing! That's something we need to learn to do more often, or we'll just burn ourselves out acting like we're "on vacation all the time".
Although that doesn't mean we didn't get out of THE POD and walk around the campground loop several times and check out the short Nature Trail here in the campground.
The campground sign looks brand new.

A privately owned cabin on the far side of the lake.
It's just so peaceful and beautiful out here.
