A LAZY WEEK AROUND THE LAKE

through

TRAVEL DAY - 127 miles

WHITE OAK CREEK CAMPGROUND
to
REED BINGHAM STATE PARK

We are slowly heading south for the winter!

This week was all about being lazy. Tricia's work was done for the month and I was fairly well caught up with the blog so we relaxed, a lot! We managed to enjoy two nights with a campfire and one night with a BBQ. The weather was a bit chilly at night and the days were very damp, so we spent most of the time inside THE POD reading and listening to music.

Speaking of music, when we bought THE POD and ROVER they both came with a free 3 month subscription to the SiriusXM satellite radio service. We didn't take advantage of having the free service very much because we were traveling up the coast of the Eastern US with plenty of sightseeing opportunities to keep us busy. We were guilty of being in more of an extended vacation mode instead of starting our new traveling lifestyle. It is the one common thing that everyone in the fulltime RV community warns newcomers about. Don't burn yourself out, slow down and enjoy yourselves. We never got to that burned out feeling, but we did realize we were coming close to it. Moving twice a week, almost every week, was taking a toll on us.

We were seeing a lot of exciting places, including historic coastal cities like Charleston and Savannah, National Parks and Seashores, The Outer Banks and lighthouses, Washington DC and all of it's National Monuments. As if that wasn't enough we traveled up into the Shenandoah Mountains and The Blue Ridge Parkway, then on to The Great Smoky Mountains to see first hand the fall colors explode on the mountain sides.

Since coming down from the mountains we have slowed down. Spending a week at each stop is now the norm and not the exception. Our travels may not be as entertaining to read about as they have been in the past few months, but we are feeling more relaxed and enjoying ourselves in a whole different manner. Which brings us back to the music discussion, it may be time for us to think about resubscribing to satellite radio. I know they want us back real bad because they call at least once a week, on top of that we just got our November mail forwarded to us and there were four different offers for us to consider. We're still not ready to pull the trigger on signing back up though, even when we can't get cell phone service we always seem to have a few free public radio stations that come in just fine. You just have to take the time to search them out.

One other thing that may be worth mentioning is I recently took up reading books. I can count on one hand the number of books I've read for pleasure over the last twenty years, but that all changed back in September. Tricia has always been a heavy hitter when it came to reading, it's probably her favorite relaxation thing to do. When we lived in the condo she read mostly paperback books, but now we both only read digital e-books on our cell phones, we can't be carrying a bunch of heavy books around the country. I started by rereading the last book I read back in 2006 and quickly found it very entertaining. Since then I've been averaging one or two books a week and realized how much it was costing us, even at $2.99 a book it was adding up. So last week I signed up for Amazon's Kindle Unlimited Service, it is usually $10 a month but they had a promo going, the first 3 months for 99 cents. The let you check out 10 books at a time and with over a million to choose from I don't think I'll have a problem finding something to keep me entertained. Such a bargain I couldn't resist, the satellite music service will just have to wait!

Back when I working working 40 hours a week my daily routine usually included 2-3 hours of prime time TV watching while Tricia was reading her books in another room. Now I know what most of you are thinking, doesn't THE POD have a television? As a matter of fact it has two, but since we have been on the road I don't think I've watched more than 10 hours of television. I don't miss it one bit! We also have a DVD player and we carry just three movies at a time in THE POD. Some of the campgrounds that we have visited in the last few months have had a free lending library of DVDs and books. You are welcome to borrow a DVD to watch while you are at the park or take it with you and leave a different movie in it's place. The campground hosts usually have to sign up for a month or more to qualify for their free campsite, I'm sure they appreciate it when a new to them movie shows up in the lending library. A couple months ago I purchased three DVDs for 50 cents a piece at a flea market and I just keep trading them for something different to watch.

It's not always about saving money, it's also about saving weight and storage space. When you are towing your less than two hundred square foot home around the country there just isn't room for books and DVDs. Another thing we did before leaving our condo behind was to digitize both of our music CD collections. Now they only reside on our laptops, cell phones and iTunes of course. Now we can still enjoy all that music and it doesn't weigh anything or take up any space, perfect!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING (2018)

Our Location:
White Oak Creek Campground
Eufaula, AL

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean islands, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holidays occur in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, and around the same part of the year in other places. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well.

LADY BUGS LOVE AIRSTREAMS

TRAVEL DAY - 157 miles

CHEAHA STATE PARK
to
WHITE OAK CREEK CAMPGROUND

Feels good to be heading south and to even lower elevations

The highest point in the entire state of Alabama is located inside of Cheaha State Park's campground. The 2,407 foot high summit of Cheaha Mountain was just a short walk from our campsite. With no cell phone service available inside the campground most of our time this week was spent at the public library in Oxford, AL. It is a forty mile round trip drive down the mountain to get there. Each day from Tuesday until Friday we traveled the long drive up and down the mountain to get a reliable cell phone signal and to have a comfortable place to get our work done, but on Saturday we decided to do some sightseeing, because Sunday was going to be laundry day.

DeSoto Caverns is our fourth visit into a cavern on this trip, but this one was nothing like the previously three. The other caverns all involved a one mile or longer tour, up and down many steps, through several different rooms, which took a little more than one hour to see. This one was different in the fact that nearly the entire tour was spent in just one room of the cavern, but what a room it was! You begin the tour by walking down this very dimly lit man made hallway, which is lighted from above. When you get near the end of the hallway the lights move to being down low on the pathway, but you can tell you are entering this very large room with a center stage and seating like you would see in an amphitheater. The tour guide then gets everyone safely seated and gives you a little bit of history of the cave, then with very little warning, plunges everyone into complete darkness by turning off the ground lights in the room. When I say complete darkness I mean you can't even see your hand in front of your face kind of darkness.

She continues talking and then slowly starts turning the lights back on. First the ground lights come back on to where they were when we first entered the room. Then a few lights around the stage in the middle of the room. Then all the lights come on revealing the fact you are in this huge room, 120 feet high and over 100 yards across. It is filled with stalagmites, stalactites, columns, draperies and flow stone. They were all visible without even leaving your seat. It truly is a grand room. We later learned that they usually introduce this room with a laser light show, but today it wasn't working so we missed out on that. They did however compensate everyone with a complimentary photo of your party in front of this beautiful and dramatically lit formation. The photo is usually something they try to sell you after the tour, but today it was free.

The tour consisted of walking around the perimeter of the room and learning about all the different types of formations. The only time we left this magnificent room was to take a short walkway into a much smaller room where there is a double waterfall. When it rains outside this waterfall flow is all natural, but with no rain today the water is pumped up to the top to give you the same experience. Even though today's waterfall was faked I still appreciated their effort to give us the full experience.

I must warn you that the photos do not reflect the grandeur of actually being there inside the cavern. They have a policy of no flash photography so we tried to capture images using only the light that was available. None on the wide angle photos we took are worth showing and those are the ones that would have given you the feeling of actually being there.

I almost forgot about the lady bugs!

Here they are all over THE POD's awning

And they were all over ROVER's windows too!

When we got back to THE POD from the cavern tour we were greeted by several hundred lady bugs. They were crawling and flying everywhere outside the truck and trailer, then eventually inside the truck and trailer as well. After doing a little research I learned that in winter lady bugs are looking for a light colored object that stays warm in direct sunlight, usually the underside of leaves. This is where they prefer to spend the long cold winter and if it has a little moisture even better. They lose their ability to fly if the temperature drops below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, so they must find a desirable winter home before it gets, and stays, too cold.

Ladybugs go from an egg stage to a full adult in only one month and can live up to three years. Their diet is mainly smaller insects but some varieties of ladybugs do eat certain plants, so although there is nothing inside THE POD for them to eat we still keep finding them everywhere. During the warm afternoons they come out of hiding and we try to capture as many as we can and return them to the outside, but it just wasn't working. When you frighten them they release a small amount of yellow smelly blood through glands in their legs. This not only stains whatever it lands on but contains a pheromone which attracts other ladybugs. While they don't usually lay eggs inside, we're not taking any chances, so they must go! They hate the smell of citrus and mint so today that is what I'll be shopping for to drive them outside where they belong.

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH

through

"The Yellowhammer State"
is our 9th visited state

TRAVEL DAY - 107 miles

McKINNEY CAMPGROUND
to
CHEAHA STATE PARK

Entering a new state for us, SWEET HOME ALABAMA!

Tricia and I are celebrating our 7 year wedding anniversary this month and we both got THE ITCH! Fortunately our itch is THE TRAVEL ITCH! Among the RV crowd it's known as HITCH ITCH, that desire to hitch up the trailer and move on to the next exciting adventure, the one that awaits us at the next campground destination of our choice. Even after six months of being together 24/7 in just a little over 200 square feet of space we both enjoy the fulltime RV lifestyle that we have chosen to live. It's not always "peaches and cream" but at the end of each day we can't see ourselves going through life any other way.

Our chosen destination for the last week has been McKinney Campground in northwestern Georgia. It is an Army Corp of Engineers park which means there is always water nearby. In this case, it is on the shores of the Lake Allatoona Reservoir on the Etowah River. We have a huge beautiful campsite which positions our rear dinette window overlooking the 12,000 acre lake.

Not a bad office view for the week.

A view of our home from the other side of the lake.

Notice how low the water levels are in the reservoir? This time of year that's pretty normal, but it's been raining most of this week so that should help matters. We did manage to enjoy a campfire one night and had two deer pass right under our rear window during one afternoon here. Not much sightseeing to do around here but Tricia did manage to get a lot of work done and I got a little maintenance on the trailer taken care of.

The major news to report is the fact that all four of our December and January camping reservations for the state parks in the Florida panhandle were cancelled due to the storm damage caused by Hurricane Michael back in October. As of right now there are six state parks campgrounds in the panhandle that are still closed, several may remain that way for months to come. Some of you know how hard it is to get campsite reservations at nearly the last minute in Florida during the winter. It seems all of the premiere sites are booked solid throughout the season, but we did manage to get confirmed reservations to make up for all the cancellations. They are not obviously our first choices, but we do have a place to stay, all have electric and water hookups, so we will be nice and comfy throughout the holidays.

TALLULAH GORGE KAYAKING

Location:
Tallulah Gorge State Park
Tallulah Falls, GA

HERE ARE THE VIDEOS I PROMISED

There seemed to be two different "lines of attack"
when it came to deciding the best way to attempt going over Oceana Falls.

WE NICKNAMED THIS THE "DAREDEVIL APPROACH"

In video #1 the kayaker approaches from the right center of the falls, skids down a slick rock area into a large wall of water, gets pushed out to the left and into another wall of water, and is then finally ejected out into the calmer waters on the near left side below the falls.

WE NICKNAMED THIS THE "HEAD ON APPROACH"

In video #2 the kayaker approaches from the near left side of the falls, travels down a manageable set of rapids, then goes head on into a wall of water, before finally getting ejected out into the calmer waters below the falls.

WE NICKNAMED THIS THE "HANDS ON APPROACH"

In video #3 the kayaker once again approaches from the near left side of the falls, the only difference is he decides to forego the use of a traditional paddle and instead uses only an oversized set of gloves.

WE NICKNAMED THIS THE "SMOOTHER APPROACH"

In video #4 the duo again approaches from the near left side of the falls, their mode of transportation is an inflatable raft. We saw several rafts go over the falls today, all down the left side, and everyone of them seemed to have had a much smoother ride.

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE VIDEOS

BACK DOWN TO LOWER ELEVATIONS

through

TRAVEL DAY - 107 miles

TULLALAH GORGE STATE PARK
to
McKINNEY CAMPGROUND

Out of the mountains and back to semi-level driving

Coming out of the mountains and back down to reasonable elevations means a couple of things are going to change. Most importantly, the temperatures should be a little more comfortable, especially the overnight lows. Next and almost as important, we should start seeing more reliable cell phone signals, which means Tricia can work right from the POD and I can maybe stay a little more up to date with the blog entries. No more loading everything we need into ROVER and driving down the mountain into town, looking for a library or other reasonable location to get some work done from. Lastly, we can now search out campsites with luxuries, like water and electricity hookups so we can run the heater and charge our laptops, and not have to fill our fresh water holding tank and tote nearly 40 gallons of water with us everywhere we go. It's going to be nice to get back to civilization. Almost forgot, also we now have unlimited hot water showers available to us, oh yeah!

Our first stop outside of the mountains is Tallulah Gorge State Park in the northeast corner of Georgia. When we booked this site we knew of course there was a gorge to explore, but what we didn't know what that most weekends in April and November the power company that owns and operates the hydroelectric dam on the Tallulah River releases enough water to create the opportunity for whitewater kayaking through the gorge and over several of the falls. We were in for an unexpected treat and the best part is the price for all this entertainment, is FREE!

First I'll give you a little perspective of what a water release means in Tallulah Gorge. On a normal day the dam releases 35-40 cubic feet per second (CFS) creating rapids and dramatic waterfalls through the two mile long gorge. But on these whitewater release days the flow is increased to 500-700 CFS to create Class IV-V kayaking conditions. I'll show you a couple of photos of the difference that means when viewing the dam, then you can watch the slideshow and I'll demonstrate the difference between Friday's normal flow and Saturday's release flow.

Friday's normal release flow - 35-40 CFS

Saturday's whitewater release flow - 500 CFS

We watched all of the action on the water below from Overlook #1 on the North Rim Trail. We saw many single kayakers and a few 1-3 man rafts go over Oceana Falls during our three hour watch. Several kayakers where turned upside down in the water but managed to roll back upright and continue downstream. Only once did someone go upside down and have to bail out of their kayak, but don't worry there were several others nearby in the water to rescue the swimmer and chase down his kayak and paddle. We also saw two kayakers who elected not to paddle over the falls and instead got out on the rocks and walked their kayaks around the falls only to reentered the water a few yards downstream.

Two other items of interest about Tallulah Falls is that in July of 1970 the famous Karl Wallenda, at the age of 65, did a high wire walk of 1200 feet long and nearly 750 feet above the gorge. As if that wasn't enough, he did two head stands while out on the middle of the wire. The other item of interest is the fact that most of the 1971 movie Deliverance was filmed at Tallulah Gorge. You remember Deliverance, the movie that gave us Dueling Banjos and starred Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox and Bill McKinney.

Anyway here come the photos and I will try to post a few short videos of the kayakers going over the falls in next post. I usually try to show you the photos in the same order that we saw them in that day. This slideshow will be a little different because I will be comparing Friday's normal water flow pictures with Saturday's whitewater release pictures, enjoy!
