STEPHEN FOSTER FOLK CULTURAL CENTER SP (FL)

We only had a short two night stay at this campground due to the tire problem we experienced at our previous stop. We barely made it out of the trailer while we were here and didn't get to explore what this park has to offer. One thing we did get to enjoy was the chiming of the Carillon Tower during the daytime. It plays, what else, Stephen Foster tunes, including the well known "Way Down Upon the Suwannee River", the river creates the southern border of the park. For the last 65 years this park has hosted the Florida Folk Festival on Memorial Day Weekend. The three day festival ticket will cost you about $50 and attracts nearly 13,000 visitors each year, so good luck trying to reserve one of the 45 campsites here for a Memorial Day visit.

TUESDAY

TRAVEL DAY
YEAR #2 - STOP #9

We intentionally took a round about way of traveling here. Sure we could have taken I-95 South through Jacksonville and then I-10 West until we were just outside of White Springs where the park is located, but that wouldn't have been very scenic of a drive. Instead we traveled the backroads due west through rural parts of Georgia and then approached White Springs from the north by traveling on US441 and the backroads of Florida, we much prefer the backroads if you hadn't guessed.

WEDNESDAY

WORK DAY FROM THE POD
34 MILES DRIVEN TODAY

We both worked all day from inside THE POD and then around 5 o'clock decided to go out for dinner and gas up ROVER for the move tomorrow. You've heard the old saying, "rolled up the sidewalks", well that's exactly what happens here in White Springs, FL. Sometime between 5-8pm that's what they do here.

We left White Springs around 5pm and traveled south 17 miles on US41 to the nearby larger town of Lake City, FL. There we visited a Home Depot, filled up with gasoline, ate dinner at the Old Time Country Buffet and did a little grocery shopping at Publix. When we returned to White Springs around 8pm we traveled down what was essentially Main Street. Everything was closed up with the exception of one Mini Mart Gas Station and one bar with two cars out front. Not only was everything closed up, there were no cars on the street, no people walking on the sidewalks, the only lights on were the streetlights overhead. It was like there was a curfew in effect that we were unaware of. I truly expected a Sheriff's patrol car to pull us over just to see what we were doing out and about at that hour. It was as if it were 4:00am instead of 8:00pm.

It was very unsettling! Now I understand what someone means when they say that the town "rolled up the sidewalks"!
