McARTHUR/BURNEY FALLS MEMORIAL STATE PARK (CA)

FRIDAY - We stayed put on our campsite until just after 1:00PM, that's because check-out here isn't until 2:00PM and we only have 33-miles to travel to get to our next site, which happens to have a 2:00PM check-in time.

We've landed at our 8th California State Park, this time it's McArthur/Burney Falls Memorial State Park. We actually passed right by their entrance gate 4-days ago on our way to Fowlers Campground.

SATURDAY - As you may have already figured out from the title of this blogpost, we're here to visit another spectacular waterfall.

This one is Burney Falls and at 129' tall it's quite a sight, as I think you'll agree after watching the follwoing slideshow.

BURNEY FALLS

The 1.2-mile Falls Loop Trail begins with this Overlook of Burney Falls.
SLIDE NUMBER
2OF24

This is a nice view of the falls, but if you want better you're going to have to hike a bit.
SLIDE NUMBER
3OF24

I wish this sign mentioned how "wide" the falls are, that's the really impressive part.
SLIDE NUMBER
4OF24

We started our hike down to the base of the falls on the loop trail.
SLIDE NUMBER
5OF24

Half way down to the base we had a partially obstructed view of the falls.
SLIDE NUMBER
6OF24

At the end of the first switchback we were right along side of the falls.
SLIDE NUMBER
7OF24

From here you get the idea of just how wide the falls actually are.
SLIDE NUMBER
8OF24

The best view however was right down at the pool level of the falls.

A panoramic video of Burney Falls.

We could have gone right back up to the parking lot, instead we began the rest of the trail.
SLIDE NUMBER
11OF24

The trail follows along the eastern bank of the outflow towards Lake Britton.
SLIDE NUMBER
12OF24

The trail to Lake Britton is closed, but if you cross the river you can continue the loop.
SLIDE NUMBER
13OF24

Crossing the river was made easy using this wooden arch bridge.
SLIDE NUMBER

Looking downstream from the center of the bridge.
SLIDE NUMBER
15OF24

Looking upstream towards the falls, from the center of the bridge.
SLIDE NUMBER
16OF24

Erosion and downed trees are the reasons for the Lake Trail closure.
SLIDE NUMBER
17OF24

There was a nice bench to rest upon on this side of the bridge.
SLIDE NUMBER
18OF24

We hiked upwards for nearly half a mile before the falls came into view.
SLIDE NUMBER
19OF24

There is definitely a much better view from the other side and in front.
SLIDE NUMBER
20OF24

We're not done climbing just yet, as you can see by these steep switchbacks.
SLIDE NUMBER
21OF24

Soon we could see the Fisherman's Bridge up ahead to cross back over the river.
SLIDE NUMBER
22OF24

There were indeed at least one fisherman on the bridge.
SLIDE NUMBER
23OF24

Looking upstream from the bridge.
SLIDE NUMBER
24OF24

Looking downstream where the water will soon plunge over Burney Falls.
